German Chocolate Bars

OK, as promised on FB, I made the bars.  I didn’t have German chocolate cake mix or swirled chips, so I improvised.

First, the ingredients:

1 18.25 oz Cake mix (I used devil’s food)
1/3 cup margarine, softened ( I used light)
1/2 egg substitute (divided)
14 oz can sweetened condensed milk (I used fat free)
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup coconut
1/2 cup chocolate chips + 1/2 cup white chips (not pictured) or 1 cup swirled chips
1/2 cup pecans
1/2 cup of either flavor chips
1/4 cup coconut

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine the cake mix, 1/4 cup of the egg substitute and softened margarine until it resembles coarse crumbs. Press in greased 9×13 pan.

Combine the sweetened condensed milk, 1/4 cup of egg substitute and vanilla.  Add chips and coconut.  Pour over prepared crust.  Sprinkle with remaining chips, coconut and pecans. Press lightly.

Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.  Press lightly in center–if the center does not appear done, bake for additional increments of 5 minutes.  Do not overbake.

Serve 🙂

I suspect this is supposed to make at least 12 bars but somehow, I doubt it will.
